Privacy Policy

Closer Today ("we," "us," "our") is a private journaling app for couples. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Closer Today, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information we collect

Account information

• Email address, used for authentication (including Sign in with Apple, when used).
• Profile details you provide: username, avatar photo, birthday, and anniversary date.
• An invite code used to link your account with your partner's.

Journal content

• Reflections — the private journal entries you write. These are never shown to your partner directly. Once both of you have reflected for the day, your entries are used to generate a personalized written summary for each of you, and are then archived (not deleted) so they aren't reused.
• Daily Question answers — your answer is only visible to your partner once they've also answered that day's question.
• Private relationship check-in — optional self-reported scores and notes about your relationship, used only to quietly inform the tone of your summaries. Never shown to your partner, never quoted back to either of you.

Shared content

• Shared memories, photos, and wishlist items you and your partner add together.
• Calendar events you log (intimacy, arguments, date nights, custom entries) and your anniversary date.
• Date ideas generated on your behalf, including the budget, time frame, interests, and nearby places you provide.

Location

When you use the Date Generator, your device may use Apple's on-device location services (MapKit) to find nearby places. This search happens directly between your device and Apple — we do not receive or store your precise location, only the place names and addresses you choose to include in a generated date idea.

Automatically collected information

• Standard technical logs from our hosting provider (timestamps, error logs) for reliability and abuse prevention.
• A device push notification token, if you enable notifications.
• Subscription status and purchase metadata from Apple, if you subscribe to premium.

2. How we use your information

• To operate the core features of the app: reflections, summaries, the daily question, memories, wishlist, calendar, and date ideas.
• To generate your daily and weekly summaries using an AI model (see "AI processing" below).
• To send push notifications you've enabled (e.g. "your summary is ready").
• To process subscription payments through Apple's App Store.
• To detect and respond to safety concerns (see "Safety screening" below).
• To maintain and improve the reliability and security of the app.

3. AI processing

To generate your summaries, weekly digests, and relationship trends, the text of your reflections is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing. This content is used solely to generate your summary and is subject to Anthropic's own data handling terms for API customers. We do not use your journal content to train any AI model.

4. Safety screening

Each reflection is automatically screened by an AI classifier for signs of active crisis (such as suicidal ideation or descriptions of danger). If detected, we immediately show you crisis resources (the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Crisis Text Line) within the app. Flagged entries are excluded from any summary shown to your partner. This is an automated, best-effort safety measure — it is not a substitute for professional care, and we cannot guarantee it will catch every situation.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers necessary to run the app:

• Supabase — our database, authentication, and file storage provider.
• Anthropic — processes reflection text to generate your summaries, as described above.
• Apple — for Sign in with Apple, push notifications (APNs), subscription billing, and on-device Maps search.

Your partner can see: the AI-generated summaries (never your raw reflections), your Daily Question answer (once they've answered too), and content you both explicitly add together (memories, wishlist, calendar, date ideas). Your private check-in scores and raw reflections are never shared with your partner.

6. Data retention and deletion

• Reflections are archived (not deleted) once a summary has been generated from them, so the underlying text is retained but marked as consumed.
• You can export a copy of your own data at any time from Settings.
• You can delete your account at any time from Settings. This permanently deletes your reflections, summaries, and account. It does not affect your partner's own reflections or summaries.
• If you unlink from your partner, your existing reflections and summaries are retained under your account; a new link is required to resume shared features.

7. Security

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and access to your data is restricted using row-level access controls, so your account can only read data it's authorized to see (for example, your partner's raw reflections are never queryable by your account, even directly). No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

8. Children's privacy

Closer Today is not intended for anyone under 17. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. You can exercise most of these directly in Settings, or contact us at support@closertoday.com.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
